How to Protect Yourself from Email Scams

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EMAIL SCAMS

SPAM VS. SCAM

Spam emails are unsolicited and often sent multiple times, but generally harmless. Scam (and phishing) emails are fraudulent messages that solicit sensitive information (e.g. Office 365 sign-in credentials, bank accounts, credit card numbers).

 

PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION

ALWAYS keep your anti-virus software up-to-date, and scan your computer regularly.

 

Here are some scam protection tips:

 

  • NEVER EVER give anyone your password. Doesn’t matter who asks or why.
  • Avoid opening unsolicited attachments. Scammers use them to transfer malware or viruses.
  • Be wary of social engineering. Scammers scrape personal information from the Internet and use it to impersonate friends or authority figures.
  • Don’t blindly click links. Hover over the link with your mouse and verify that the link matches the text.
  • If you do click an unsolicited link, and it takes you to a sign-in page, DON’T sign in.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

UNSURE IF IT'S A SCAM/PHISHING ATTEMPT?

If you are unsure whether or not a message you receive is a scam/phishing attempt, send the suspected message with full headers to [email protected]. Better to ask before you act.

 

REPORT CONFIRMED SCAM/PHISHING EMAILS

Send definite scam/phishing emails with full headers to [email protected]. This helps our filtering rules prevent scams/phishing attempts from reaching mailboxes.

Obtaining Full Email Headers

For more information on how to find full headers in Outlook, see the Microsoft Support site.

To obtain full email headers from Office 365 on the Web, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to portal.office.com.
  2. Click the "Mail" tile.
  3. Select the message you want full headers for, then the Down Arrow next to "Reply/Reply All."
  4. Select "View Message Details."
  5. Copy everything in the box that appears, and include that text with your report.
